Fashion connoisseur aspires to obtain lash artist certification

Grandview resident Amelia Esquivel has always been a 'people' person.

So it's no surprise she fits right in as a cashier selling fashion clothing to Sunnyside consumers.

Candigurlz in Sunnyside is a trendy plus-size clothing and accessory store, and Esquivel is in charge of the whole operation in Sunnyside, while the owner primarily is in Yakima.

Recently the company added an extension to their business, "Eye Candi." The addition is a service offered to area consumers to get professional eyelash extensions done at a low cost.

"We want to target the working middle class," she said.

According to Esquivel, other eyelash salons charge between $100 and $150. But Eye Candi just charges $50 for the service.

The 2007 Sunnyside High School graduate had no idea what she wanted to do after high school. But after more than two years working at Candigurlz, she says she's right at home.

Between the two locations, Candigurlz has one certified lash technician, and Esquivel says she hopes to soon be certified as well.

"Then we can offer the service on a regular basis in Sunnyside," she said, as now the Sunnyside shop only offers the service on Thursdays.

As part of her everyday duties Esquivel stocks merchandise, checks out customers and assists with questions they may have.

The things she loves the most about her job is the hands-on work she gets to do. It gets her creative juices flowing, she said.
