A proposition to increase sales tax one tenth of 1 percent in Yakima County to make up for budget deficits in the Department of Corrections was rejected by voters in yesterday's primary election.
Proposition 1 is failing by almost 1,200 votes out of 18,500 counted so far and is unlikely to make up the deficit with the votes remaining to be counted.
"I'm obviously disappointed, we were hopeful, but at the same time I'm not surprised, I guess," said County Commissioner Rand Elliott. "It's pretty hard to ask voters to increase taxes in the best of times, let alone these times. We will respect the decision voters made and move on as best we can, primarily with the levy shift from county roads."
