City looking for lawyer to replace Yakima firm

The City of Sunnyside is actively recruiting and advertising for an in-house attorney after several years of outsourcing the job to Menke Jackson Beyer Ehlis & Harper LLP of Yakima.

Interim City Manager Frank Sweet said the Yakima law firm has terminated its contract with the city as of Sept. 30, 2012.

The city's last in-house attorney, Mark Kunkler, who also served as assistant city manager, resigned when the city council fired City Manager Eric Swansen in June of 2009.

Since then, each city manager has considered hiring a new attorney, but ultimately the city has stuck with Menke Jackson.

The position would include serving as chief legal officer of the city, preparing legislation and resolutions, prosecuting violators of city ordinances, serving as prosecutor in Sunnyside Municipal Court, representing the city in legal proceedings and assisting on insurance claims for the city.
