County approves plan to revitalize downtown core in Sunnyside

Efforts to revitalize Sunnyside's downtown core took a step forward yesterday, Tuesday, when Yakima County commissioners accepted Phase 1 of the plan as complete.

Phase 1 centers on detailed planning for improvements to downtown Sunnyside - everything from new light fixtures to sidewalks. The city received a $250,000 grant to pay for the design work.

Yakima County is involved in the project as a certification agency, verifying that the design meets state and federal regulations.

As with Phase 1, the city is working with Yakima-based Huibregtse Louman Associates in seeking grant funds to pay for construction costs associated with the downtown improvements.

Huibregtse Louman also assisted Grandview in designing that city's downtown revitalization project.
