YAKIMA - Winning 12-of-13 head-to-head matches, six of them by a pin, the Sunnyside boys wrestling team rolled to a 71-3 thumping of host Eisenhower last night, Thursday.
The most dominant performance of the evening came near the end of the match, when Sunnyside's Austin Carmen (220 lbs.) pinned Ike's Carlos Acevedo in just 15 seconds.
Additional Grizzly pins were turned in by Homer Romero (over Jared Covington in 2:53 in the 113-lb. match), Daniel Guillen (over Ricardo Badillo in 4:12 in the 132-lb. match), Christian Reyes (over Richard Estamos in 3:41 in the 138-lb. match) and Ramon Hernandez (over Riley Dampier in 1:50 in the 160-lb. match).
The other Grizzly to record a pin was Noe Palomino (145 lbs.) in 3:04 over Ike's Riley John.
Sunnyside also received a technical fall at 182 lbs., when Max Ramos defeated Ike's John Nickels 18-0.
In another lopsided outcome, Grizzly Santos Guerrero (120 lbs.) scored a 13-3 major decision over Julian Alonso of Eisenhower.
At 106 lbs., Sunnyside's Jesse Torres outpointed Cameron Manjarrez 12-5, while at 195 lbs., Daniel Avalos of Sunnyside shut out Ike's Carlos Capetillo by a score of 7-0.
In the tightest match of the night, Anthony Chavez of Sunnyside outpointed the Cadets' Omar Acevedo 16-12.
Ike's lone glimmer of hope came at 170 lbs., where Andres Acevedo edged Sunnyside's Jiovanni Rodriguez 12-5.
"The kids looked good," Sunnyside Coach George Paulus said of his squad. "We did pretty well."
Paulus and the Grizzlies, though, are quickly turning their attention to the Fife Invitational tomorrow, Saturday. Sunnyside, which left today for the all-day tourney, has won the Fife event the past three years in a row.
"The goal is to win the tourney again," says Paulus. "Right now we're just trying to get better on our feet and be a little more focused."
Tourneys, like the one this weekend, are a good opportunity for the Grizzlies to fine-tune their wrestling technique.
"We want to sweat the little things a little more," Paulus says. "The little things are what makes the difference."
