YAKIMA - At its first match of the season, the Sunnyside girls wrestling team confirmed Coach Terry Shines' optimism about the season.
With just four girls able to compete at yesterday's match against Yakima's Eisenhower High School team, the girls were able to win two matches by decision, while being pinned twice by the Cadets.
Grizzly Adriana Chavez (100 lbs.) hit the mat for her first-ever competition, getting pinned by a Cadet in just 19 seconds.
"Adriana did really well for her first match ever," Shines said.
The second match on the evening was completed by Jeniya Guillen (115 lbs.), who was pinned by an Eisenhower wrestler in 1:42.
Though the first two bouts ended in pins, Shines says he's proud of the girls and is excited to see how the year progresses.
"Jeniya wrestled up a few pounds, she did a lot of good things out there, but in the end the heavier girl pinned her," he said.
The bright spots came from Sunnyside's Kayla Gonzalez (108 lbs.) and Daisy Chavez (124 lbs.), who both won their matches by scores of 16-0 and 12-7, respectively.
The Lady Grizzlies hit the mat again tonight (Friday), but with a full team of 13 wrestlers at Othello. The weekend is set to stay busy as the Lady Grizzlies are set to also travel tomorrow to Connell.
