Outlook woman dies in pile-up

OUTLOOK - A three-vehicle pile-up on Yakima Valley Highway late yesterday morning claimed the life of 58-year-old Estella Z. Patterson of Outlook.

Washington State Patrol officials say the accident occurred Tuesday morning at about 11 a.m., just east of West Sunnyside Road near Outlook.

According to WSP investigators, Norma Garcia Guadian, 32, of Outlook, eastbound on Yakima Valley Highway in a 1992 Honda Accord, slowed or had stopped because there were animals in the roadway.

Patterson, driving a 2010 Nissan Altima, was trailing Guadian's car and stopped her vehicle in the roadway behind the Honda Accord. A third eastbound vehicle, a 1995 GMC Suburban driven by 21-year-old Quinn J. McEwen of Granger, struck Patterson's Nissan Altima from behind at a great enough force to push Patterson's car into the back end of the car that originally slowed for the animals in the roadway.

Patterson died at the scene of the wreck. Her vehicle was totaled.

WSP troopers said neither McEwen nor Guadian were injured in the pile-up.

The incident is currently under investigation, and charges are pending.
