County inks deal for transit

YAKIMA - Yakima County commissioners this past Tuesday renewed a contract with People for People to provide transportation services to those age 60 and older.

Lori Brown is the director of Aging and Long Term Care, an agency that oversees services for the elderly and disabled in eight counties, including Yakima County. She said the contract approved Tuesday for 2013 is for $161,000, and that most of the funds are covered by federal as well as some state dollars.

The contract provides transportation for seniors in need of access for essential shopping and medical visits.

In 2010, the most recent figures available, 615 seniors were served through the program, most of them in Yakima County.
