MABTON - In the final minutes of the game last Friday night, the Bickleton Lady Pirates were able to come back from a 14-point deficit against Mabton's JV basketball squad to eke out a 44-43 win.
In the first quarter Bickleton's varsity trailed by one point. At the half, the Lady Pirates were behind 22-19. Mabton increased its lead again in the third by 13, via a score of 35-21.
But all that changed in the fourth stanza when Bickleton's Jamie Venema was able to return to the game.
"Jamie was out for most of the game because of foul trouble, but she's really good at getting the team pumped up," Bickleton Coach Emily Barnhart added.
The Lady Pirates also re-strategized their defensive techniques, and were able to pull out a whopping 23 points in the fourth for a one-point victory over the Mabton JV.
Venema scored 18 points on the night while also grabbing 13 rebounds, for her usual double-double during game play. Another bright spot for the Lady Pirates was Lindsay Brown's 18 rebounds.
The Bickleton Lady Pirates, (0-2, 5-3) next compete Jan. 4-5, at the Helix, Ore. tournament.
