RICHLAND - Five Mabton wrestlers combined to post a 9-3 record yesterday, Thursday, during the first day of the Hanford Winter Cup wrestling tourney.
Yesterday's wrestling focused on JV boys and girls varsity squads. There were not individual or team placings awarded, instead wrestlers were placed in groups of three or four and competed in a round-robin format.
"It was a day to get them some experience, some wrestling time," said Mabton Coach John Kilian. "
The Lady Vikes had three grapplers in action. The top performance for the girls came in the 137-lb. weight class, where Jesenia Meza posted a 3-0 record with two first-round pins and a 10-0 major decision.
Jazmin Mendoza (124 lbs.) earned a 2-0 record at Hanford yesterday, pinning both of her opponents. "That's a good day," said Kilian.
The third Lady Viking wrestler, Noemi Gutierrez, posted a mark of 1-1 in the 112-lb. weight class.
Mabton also took two freshman boys to yesterday's JV invite.
Kilian said the two, Rudy Ramirez (182 lbs.) and Isaac Velasquez (195 lbs.), usually wrestle with the Viking varsity, but competed at the JV meet yesterday to give them some more competitive mat time. "It's nice to give your young guys some experience so they can compete," the coach said.
Velasquez was a perfect 3-0 yesterday, while Ramirez posted a mark of 0-2.
"The kids did well yesterday," said Kilian. "Even Rudy, he lost his matches but he's improving and looking better."
