Child porn charges filed

MABTON - Last week county prosecutors filed a felony charge against a Mabton man accused of having child pornography in his possession.

"The initial report came from Microsoft," said Yakima County Sheriff Detective Stu Graham.

Microsoft operates a "cloud drive," which allows its users to upload and store electronic information with the ability to access it in various locations.

Microsoft notified officials in Seattle, who in turn notified the Yakima County Sheriff's Department. Detectives began working on the case by identifying an IP address, which led detectives to the home of 26-year-old Michael Alvarez.

Apparently the case began this past October with Microsoft's initial notification. The detailed investigation ended with detectives at Alvarez's home on Jefferson Street in Mabton last week.

Investigators say they found video uploads stored on Alvarez's computer detailing young girls being sexually abused. Alvarez faces possession of child pornography charges as soon as Feb. 8, after an arraignment in Yakima County Superior Court.

Yakima County Prosecutor Jim Hagarty said the defendant, Alvarez, has been charged with possession of child pornography. Because the investigation is still ongoing, no further details are available.
