Mabton girls District tourney bound

The Mabton Lady Vikings took out SCAC East powerhouse Connell in a close game last Friday, coming from behind to beat the Eagles 53-50.

"This was our best effort of the year," said Mabton Coach Chris McCallum.

The Lady Vikes were down by 10 at halftime, but outscored Connell 41-28 in the second half.

"We came out in the first half and were not aggressive, did a lot of standing around and not enough attacking on offense," said McCallum. "Totally different team in the second half."

Three Lady Vikes were in double digits in scoring. Leading the way was Jazzee Sustaita with 17 points.

"We've been working with Jazzee all year on going to the basket more," said McCallum "This last week she's been doing it more and that's been a big part of our success of late."

Alyssa Nash had 12 points and eight rebounds in the win and Sierra Cerrillo had 11 points, going 4-for-5 from the charity stripe, including two big free throws late in the game.

"We came out, attacked them and got a few of their key players in foul trouble," said McCallum. "Then when we got to foul line, especially in the fourth quarter, we made it count."

The Lady Vikes were 8-for-11 from the free throw line in the fourth, 16-for-27 in the game.

"For us to go into the number 10 team in the state's home court and win gives us a lot of confidence going into the District tournament," said McCallum. "We will have a tough road ahead of us."

On Saturday, Mabton beat Wahluke 44-31 to finish off its regular season with a three game winning streak.

Sustaita led the Lady Vikings with 15 points in Saturday's game.

Mabton ended league play 7-5 and tied for third place in the league, and 9-11 overall.

Mabton starts the playoffs against LaSalle on Friday, Feb. 10, at 5:15 p.m. at West Valley High School.
