MATTAWA - Abigail Elizondo and Jessica Cardenas will carry the banner for the Sunnyside High School girls wrestling team at this coming Friday and Saturday's WIAA State Wrestling Tournament at the Tacoma Dome.
Both, Elizondo and Cardenas earned State tourney berths via runner-up finishes at last Saturday's Regional meet, hosted by Wahluke High School.
Sunnyside will also be sending Yunuenn Garcia and Sonia Romero to Tacoma as alternates. Both girls completed Regional action last weekend with fourth-place performances, one spot away from an outright berth to State.
For the junior Elizondo, this will be her second consecutive appearance at State. At Regionals last Saturday, wrestling at 130 lbs., she opened the meet with two straight victories, which advanced her into the finals. In the championship bout, Elizondo was pinned by highly regarded Kourtney Browning of the East Valley Red Devils.
Cardenas, only a freshman, will be making her first trip to Tacoma later this week. A 170-lb. grappler, she, like Elizondo, opened Regionals with a pair of wins, only to fall by a 15-0 score in the title match to Connell's Felisha Orozco.
Garcia, competing at 118 lbs., posted a 2-2 record on the day last Saturday. Her final loss, in the consolation finals to decide the No. 3 and final berth to State, ended up with the Lady Grizzly getting pinned by Royal City's Mariana Alvarez. Garcia will travel with Sunnyside to Tacoma as an alternate, in case one of the 118-lb. State qualifiers comes down with an illness or injury, or can't make weight.
Sunnyside's second alternate at State will be Romero, despite going 0-2 in the Regional meet's 195-lb. weight class. There were only four girls entered in that weight class last Saturday, which assured Romero of at least the alternate's spot.
From the 29-school field competing at Wahluke last Saturday, Sunnyside's nine wrestlers garnered a tie for fourth-place honors. Both, the Lady Grizzlies and Connell accumulated 53 team points to share the No. 4 finish at Regionals. The first through third-place finishers at Regionals in the team standings were Warden with 191 points, Othello with 149 and Mabton with 55 points.
