I want to commend the Daily Sun News for reporting criticism of your reporting that was leveled during a recent city council meeting. It's a good example of what a free press is supposed to do. Inform the rest of us what is going on.
By the same token I want to counter the opinion of the council speaker, a local dentist, who opined that defending the city and the police is the newspaper's responsibility. Nothing could be further from the mission of a free press. Your job is to keep an eye on city hall (Lord knows we need it in this town).
So, keep up the good work, keep vigilant and when your reporters are attending the endless, boring meetings where malcontents drone on and on - regardless of what side of the desk they are sitting - please know that those of us fortunate enough to be home, well, we appreciate your reporter's efforts on our behalf. And, when the city council screws up we want to hear about it. When a council member does something foolish, misguided or downright mean spirited, we want to know that, too.
Without a free press those who scream the loudest, or invest the most will win out, and rarely is that in the best interest of the majority whether it is in our city, state or nation.
