Pirates sunk at Oregon tournament

HELIX, ORE. - The Bickleton Pirates traveled to Oregon last week to take part in the Helix tournament, and came out with two losses in the two games.

The BHS boys basketball team first played the Powder Valley Badgers, losing 62-23.

"They simply over powered us with size and quickness," said Coach Jerry Roberts.

Junior Justin Roberts led the Pirates' scoring with seven points. Peter Clinton scored six points and Jayjay Bates bucketed five points.

In their second game, the Pirates faced off against their Helix hosts, playing the Griswold Grizzlies into overtime. Bickleton eventually lost 54-49.

Coach Roberts said the team was in foul trouble and lost three starters during overtime.

"We had a balanced scoring attack from the team but didn't have enough to make up for a flat third quarter of shooting," said Roberts. "The boys played with a lot of heart and we learned from this game about playing the way the officials call the game."

Mitchell Powers led the Pirates in game two, scoring 11 points. Bates contributed 10.

"Again we had a balanced scoring attack which is something that will help us down the road," said coach Roberts.

Bickleton (1-4) next plays at home this Wednesday, Jan. 4, against the Pasco sophomore team.
