Manuel Rodriguez, 71, of Sunnyside passed away surrounded by his family on Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2012, after an eight-month battle with cancer.

Manuel was born June 10, 1940 in Ignacio Zaragoza Durango, Mexico to Manuel and Inez (Almaraz) Rodriguez.

Manuel moved to the U.S. in 1980. He worked as a farm laborer for the Kilian Brothers and also for Independence Foods.

Manuel enjoyed spending time with family and friends, dancing, listening to music and gardening.

Manuel is survived by his mother, Inez of Mexico; his wife, Rosa Valdez; their 12 children, Adelina (Lucino), Concepcion, Silvina (Cornelio), Mauricio (Lilia), Rosa Isela (Adrian) and Silvia (Luis), all of Mexico, Valentin (Antonia) Rodriguez of Seattle, Tomas (Linda), Lucila (Jorge), Jose (Petra) and Santiago Rodriguez, all of Sunnyside, and Juanita (Benjamin) Gonzalez of Granger; 43 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; his partner of 13 years, Eloisa Montoya and family; brothers, Carlos (Francisca) of Sunnyside, Ignacio, Francisco and Miguel, all of Mexico; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Manuel was preceded in death by his father, Manuel; and two grandsons, Ermenejildo and Valentin Jr.

Visitation will be held today, Jan. 10, 2012, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., with recitation of the Holy Rosary at 6 p.m. at Valley Hills Funeral Home in Sunnyside. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday Jan. 11, 2012, at 1 p.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Sunnyside. Burial will follow in Durango, Mexico.
