Vikes split against SCAC foes

CLE ELUM - The good news is that the Mabton Viking wrestling team won the majority of its head-to-head matches against host Cle Elum and Highland.

The bad news last night, Thursday, is that after thumping Cle Elum the shorthanded Vikes fell victim to forfeits in a narrow loss to Highland.

Against Cle Elum, Mabton built a 36-0 lead and cruised to a 42-13 SCAC West victory. The match featured five head-to-head contests, with the Vikes winning three of them.

It all started at 106 lbs., where first-time Mabton wrestler Omar Rojas pinned the Warriors' Charlie Hoffine in just 48 seconds.

After receiving a forfeit at 113 lbs., Mabton's Emiliano Rodriguez (120 lbs.) followed with a pin over Cody Robinson in 1:30.

There were three weight classes with no matches because neither team had a wrestler available. That left Mabton's Vicente Mireles at 132 lbs., who scored a pin in 2:38 over Dylan Powell.

After giving up back-to-back forfeits, the Warriors earned their only two head-to-head wins as Connor Briggs (170 lbs.) defeated Mabton's Emilio Mireles 13-0 and Brian Orndorff (285 lbs.) outpointed Mabton's Eric Huesca 4-2.

The Vikings next faced Highland in a 39-36 loss.

Mabton won four-of-six head-to-head contests against the Scotties, but was undone because it forfeited five matches. That included one stretch where the Vikes forfeited three in a row.

Mabton and Highland opened at 113 lbs., where Rodriguez was pinned by Highland's Oscar Morales in 5:05.

After surrendering a forfeit, Mabton got on the winning track at 126 lbs., thanks to a pin in 2:35 recorded by Mireles over Miguel Negrete.

Next came Mabton's three forfeits, which turned the contest Highland's way for good.

Fabian Ruiz (152 lbs.) got the Vikes in the win column again with a pin in 1:35 over Luis Cortez.

That was followed by Highland's only other head-to-head win, when Luke Williams (160 lbs.) outpointed Mabton's Brandon Marquez 5-1.

Mireles was up next at 170 lbs., and delivered a pin over Highland's Tomas Alvarez in 2:22.

After the two squads exchanged forfeits, Mabton won the final head-to-head contest of the night at 285 lbs., when Gabriel Martinez recorded a pin in 2:27 over Highland's Matthew Majnarick.

Mabton's varsity wrestling squad is in action again next Tuesday, when it hosts Granger and Zillah. In a schedule change, the match was moved from the original date of next Thursday.

In other Mabton wrestling schedule changes, the Viking JV and girls squads will compete at a JV tourney in Highland tomorrow, Saturday.
