Grandview wins first dual of year

MOXEE - The Grandview wrestling team, after several close matches, has finally succeeded in earning a team victory.

Last night, the Greyhounds defeated the East Valley Red Devils 38-30.

There were a total of eight bouts, of which Grandview won five. The team also earned 18 points via three forfeits, but the Red Devils picked up two forfeits of their own.

Winning a 13-4 decision for Grandview was 126-pounder David Castaneda. He defeated East Valley's Luis Aguilar.

"We shuffled some people around to get some better match-ups," said Grandview Coach Jeff Sevigny, stating the results of adjusting the line-up were positive.

He was pleased the Greyhounds were able to secure a league win.

Eduardo Alcantar wrestled up a weight class. He moved from 145 lbs. to 152 lbs. and earned a 7-3 decision over Benji Molina of the Red Devils.

"(Eduardo) had an exceptionally good match," said Sevigny, stating the Greyhound has done well after returning to the team just after the winter break.

Grandview's Jaron Raymond (132 lbs.) pinned Jon Gonzales of East Valley in 3:51.

In the 145-lb. weight class, Josesiah Saunders prevailed 9-7 over Red Devil Zach Romero, and Grandview's Fidel Medina won a 15-7 decision over East Valley's Berkley Aguilar in the 113-lb. bout.

Not all the matches went Grandview's way, and that was especially true for 120-pounder Juan Tzib of Grandview. The Greyhound lost by pin in 1:04 to East Valley's Austin Mitchell.

Alex Soberanes of the 'Hounds also had a rough go of it. He was pinned in 1:31 by Logan Merkle in the 138-lb. weight class.

Red Devil Daniel Flores (182 lbs.) won the last dual for his team. He defeated Grandview's A.J. Valenzuela by pin in 56 seconds.

Grandview will return to the mat at home tomorrow (Thursday) when Othello comes to town.
