WHITE SWAN - The Mabton Viking wrestling team wrapped up its regular season dual match season with a 36-30 victory last night at White Swan.
All of the host Cougars' points Wednesday night were the result of Mabton forfeits.
The Vikes, in turn, only received two forfeits from White Swan, but prevailed in all four head-to-head matches.
As it turned out, all four of the wins were by pins, scoring the Vikes just enough points to pull out a win.
"We pinned all four of them, that was the only thing that saved our bacon," said Mabton Coach John Kilian. "I thought with the amount of forfeits we gave up it was a surprising win."
Emiliano Rodriguez (113 lbs.) scored a pin in 1:25 over White Swan's Arthur Martin.
Mabton's Vicente Mireles (126 lbs.) followed that by taking down Rodrigo Alvarado in the second round of the match, in a time of 2:42.
Brandon Marquez (160 lbs.) also scored a second round pin for the Vikes by taking down White Swan's Steven George in 2:22.
With the score tied at 30-30, the match outcome was decided in the final head-to-head bout of the evening at 285 lbs. That's when Mabton's Eric Huesca provided the winning margin by pinning Derek Nanez in the third round, in 4:58.
With the dual regular season behind them, Kilian said the Vikings will take a few wrestlers to the all-comers event at Zillah this Saturday.
The main focus, he says, is preparing for the District tourney in Granger on Saturday, Feb. 4.
"We have guys resting up from injuries. We're going to try and go into Districts as healthy as we can be," he said.
