Sunnyside firemen were called to a reported house fire yesterday (Wednesday) at approximately 9 a.m. Firemen arrived in the 1000 block of Yakima Valley Highway to find a double-wide modular home engulfed in flames and smoke.
Sunnyside Fire Chief Aaron Markham says the fire began in the attic, but the cause is unknown and is still under investigation.
Firemen spent nearly an hour trying to contain the flames.
"Because it was hard to access the hidden fire soot, in took an hour to get everything apart to extinguish the flames," Markham said.
Markham says because of water and smoke damage, and the entire destruction of the roof, he estimates the home as a total loss.
The Sunnyside family was connected with the American Red Cross and no injuries were reported.
In addition, firefighters responded to two citizen assistance requests and three calls for aid. Of the calls for aid, three people were transported to Sunnyside Community Hospital. Of the patients at the hospital, one was transferred to another area facility.
