MABTON - Mabton officers attempted to pull over a vehicle failing to yield, but they didn't expect the incident to turn into a foot chase resulting in capturing a possible drive-by shooting suspect.
An 18-year-old male driving a white 2002 Chevrolet Cavalier attempted to elude Mabton officers by jumping out of the still-running vehicle last Friday, June 29. The vehicle rolled and struck a Mabton police vehicle on Highway 22 near Mabton.
Earlier in the day officers were investigating a drive-by shooting incident that took place in the 200 block of Third Avenue. Officers say the victim of the drive-by suffered non-life threatening injuries and refused to cooperate with police.
Police believe the driver of the 2002 Cavalier to be a suspect in the earlier shooting. In addition, Mabton officers reported the driver is also a suspect in a shooting that occurred earlier in the week, being investigated by Yakima County Sheriff's deputies.
The suspect was caught and taken into custody. Mabton officers reported the suspect is going to face charges of eluding, obstruction and causing a hit and run accident with a police vehicle.
Mabton police officers have also fielded two calls of fireworks complaints, a malicious mischief report, an agency assistance request and a traffic offense since last Tuesday, June 24.
