Airport weather system monies headed here

YAKIMA - In action this past Tuesday, Yakima County commissioners approved a loan/grant package of $50,000 for the city of Sunnyside.

The funds will help the city install an Air Weather Observation System (AWOS) III at the Sunnyside Airport.

The new system will enhance weather observation systems already in place in Yakima and the Tri-Cities.

A Lower Valley location for the weather observation system is required because of this area's potential for cloud cover, as well as isolated thunder and lightning that may not be visible to pilots in Yakima or the Tri-Cities.

The money is provided through the county's Supporting Investments in Economic Diversification (SIED) fund. Half of the $50,000 is a grant and the other half a loan to be paid in five annual installments.
