Our beloved mom, grammy, great-grammy and friend, Mary Catherine Shrewsberry, 95, of Sunnyside went to be

in the arms of her Savior on Saturday, July 7, 2012.

Mary was born July 21, 1916 in Timber Lake, S.D., the daughter of Albert B. and Catherine (Huber) Verhey. At an early age Mary's mother died and she was raised by her father and older siblings.

She graduated from Timber Lake High School in 1933. In 1934 the Verhey family moved to Sunnyside, where they farmed.

Mary attended business college in Everett, where she met and later married Clyde Shrewsberry on April 13, 1942.

She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, active member of the Sunnyside Senior Center and was a Gold Star Mother.

She was a very hard worker, a sweetheart and a non-judgmental and responsible lady. She demonstrated humor and loved a good story. Grammy was genuinely interested in anyone who crossed her path. She never needed a reason to get together with family or friends.

Not much surprised her but when it did, she would respond with "whoopie la la!"

Grammy also loved tic tacs and hard candy, especially butterscotch. She liked to play many kinds of games, especially Connect Four and UNO. She loved to people watch. She and her friends used to be mall walkers and they eventually became mall watchers.

Mary loved to entertain and socialize, so if you went to visit her she would always have a piece of her Lemon Meringue pie or some special treat to serve you.

She enjoyed playing pinochle and the organ, taking trips with family and friends and spent many hours at their cabin near Tampico.

Mary is survived by her son, David (Karen) Shrewsberry of Sunnyside; three grandchildren, Kay La Roche, Keri Orate and Lynn Shrewsberry; and two great-grandchildren, Chance Shrewsberry and Jackson Orate.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Clyde P. Shrewsberry in 1981; a son, Roger Shrewsberry in 1968; two brothers, Bernard and William; and three sisters, Elizabeth, Helena and Sister Margaret DeLourdes Verhey.

For all that knew and loved her she will be greatly missed.

Viewing and visitation will be held Thursday, July 12, 2012, from 3 to 8 p.m., with recitation of the Holy Rosary to be recited at 6 p.m. at Smith Funeral Home in Sunnyside. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, July 13, 2012, at 1 p.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Sunnyside, with burial to follow at Lower Valley Memorial Garden in Sunnyside.
