Sharks swim circles around Piranhas

PROSSER - Prosser's Piranhas - thanks to the quartet of William Burgett, Haden Hicks, Sophia Gourley and Shannon Whiting - were able to take a few nibbles out of Sunnyside's swimmers last night. The visiting Sharks bared their teeth mightily in the rest of the match-ups, however, and swam off with a convincing 308.5-189.5 victory.

Thursday evening's win improved the Sunnyside summer swim club's league record to 8-2.

Last night's meet, as has been the case lately, was cut short due to nearby lightning flashes. But because four of the seven events were completed before the bad weather set in, the remainder of the races do not have to be made up and the results will officially go into the league record books.

Sunnyside had three swimmers who registered wins in all four events staged last night...the Broersma sisters, Brittany and Marisa, and Emily Banks. The Sharks also had two athletes who got in on three victories...Fox Rodriguez and Katelyn Banks.

The younger of the Broersma sisters, 16&U swimmer Brittany, was most impressive in the 50-meter breaststroke. She won by a 4.84-second margin over Prosser's Danielle McKiernan, the runner-up.

The elder of the two Broersma sisters, 18&U competitor Marisa, was never seriously challenged in any of her races. Her margins of victory were 5.73, 7.19 and 6.69 seconds in the butterfly, breaststroke and backstroke, respectively.

Emily Banks, at girls 12&U, also easily withstood her challengers. Her margins of victory in the three individual events ranged from a third of a second to 3.20 seconds.

Prosser's top two standouts were Burgett, at boys 16&U, and Hicks, at boys 10&U. Each of them won all three of the individual races in their age divisions, and both swam on the winning relay squads in their respective age groupings.

Piranha teammates Gourley (girls 10&U) and Whiting (girls 8&U) came away with wins in the butterfly and backstroke events.

One of the closest races of the night occurred in the girls 12&U, 200-meter medley relay. Less than two-tenths of a second separated the Sunnyside and Prosser squads. The photo finish went the Sharks' way, as the foursome of Emily Banks, Esmi Cerda, Brielle Newhouse and Emily Broersma clocked a time of 2:34.81. Finishing with a time of 2:34.95 were Prosser's Jenna Brown, Ali Cox, Leah Blakney and Kaylyn Sanders.

Another eye-blinker came in the girls 14&U, 50-meter backstroke. Sunnyside teammates Katelyn Banks and Lindsay Schilperoort battled it out for top honors, with Banks prevailing by just five one-hundredths of a second. In the same event, Sunnyside's Aydan Harrington and Jaiden Hamilton of Prosser tied for third-place honors, only three-quarters of a second back of the winner.

Sunnyside's final two league meets of the season are scheduled for next Tuesday at home against Toppenish and next Thursday at Othello. The July 27-29 Mid-Valley Swim League Championships in Naches will then close out the summer's action.
