Sharks smash 13 pool records in final league meet of season

OTHELLO - Records are meant to be broken. Just ask the Sunnyside Rotary summer swim team.

In the final Mid-Valley Swim League meet of the season Wednesday evening, peaking apparently at the right time heading into the league championship meet in Naches this coming weekend, the Sharks shattered 13 Othello pool records enroute to shredding the Barracudas, 573-193.

Last night's victory over Othello leaves Sunnyside with the second-best mark in the league standings, at 10-2. The Selah Dolphins, who finished a perfect 12-0 in head-to-head match-ups this summer, were the only team to best the Sharks this season.

In routing Othello in its home pool last night, the Sharks made mincemeat of the old marks that once stood as the best times ever recorded there. A total of 17 Sunnyside swimmers got in on the action in breaking the records.

The one Shark who especially stole the limelight was boys 10&U competitor Clay Schilperoort. He personally set two records by himself, and was in on two others as a member of two relay squads in his age division.

Schilperoort's most impressive showing came in the 200-yard individual medley. He swam the eight lengths of the 25-yard pool in a time of 3:36.03, a full 9.66 seconds quicker than the previous best, set earlier this summer by Eli Ziegler of Selah. And, Schilperoort accomplished the feat without being pushed by anyone else in last night's race, as the next closest finisher came in approximately 29 seconds behind him.

In the 50-yard backstroke Schilperoort again went untested as the runner-up finished almost nine seconds behind him. Yet, the Sunnyside youngster found his own motivation and snapped off a time of 44.85 seconds, beating the old pool record of 46.78 for that age division, set by Othello's Dusty Carlson back in 2010.

Schilperoort, too, teamed with Levi Newhouse, Clayton Robert and Patrick Gallagher to establish pool records in the boys 10&U, 200-yard medley and freestyle relay events. In the 200-medley relay, the foursome set a new pool best clocking of 3:20.69. The previous best was set earlier this season by a squad from Selah, a clocking of 3:30.68. In the 200-freestyle relay, the four Sunnyside swimmers clocked in at 2:52.69, breaking the old record of 2:53.97, which had also been set earlier this summer by a crew from Selah.

Sunnyside's Logan Rodriguez, at boys 8&U, also had a big night for the Sharks. He set pool records for his age division in the 25-yard backstroke and 25-yard freestyle. In the back, Rodriguez clocked a time of 23.88 seconds, 1.18 seconds quicker than the previous best, established last year by Othello's Kai Quigley. In the 25-free, as it turned out, both Rodriguez and teammate Myles Newhouse posted quicker times than the old pool record of 20.87 seconds, but it was Rodriguez who had the faster clocking (18.90).

Newhouse got a record of his own, however, when he won the boys 8&U, 25-yard butterfly. He, Rodriguez and Othello's Aiden Thien all finished under the old record of 28.22 seconds set in 2011 by Jake Coray, but it was Newhouse's clocking of 23.35 that proved the best.

Sunnyside's 14&U girls also put their talents on full display last night, teaming to set two pool records in the two relay events. In the 200-yard medley relay, the foursome of Lindsay Schilperoort, Kalie Bestebreur, Aydan Harrington and Katelyn Banks demolished the old mark of 2:29.28 that was set earlier this year by a squad from Selah. The Sunnyside foursome clocked a time of 2:18.22. In the 200-free relay, it was Bestebreur, Harrington, Banks and Summer Hazzard swimming to a new pool record clocking of 2:06.78. The previous best, again set by Selah girls earlier this summer, was 2:14.22.

Girls 12&U competitor Jolissa Mendoza of Sunnyside made sure she didn't go unnoticed last night, too. She wiped out the old pool record for her age division in the 50-yard backstroke, swimming the two lengths of the pool in a time of 37.06 seconds. The previous best of 38.50 was set by her teammate, Katelyn Banks, back in 2010.

Mendoza also teamed up with fellow Sharks Esmi Cerda, Emily Broersma and Emily Banks to set a pool record last night in the 200-yard freestyle relay. They set a time of 2:19.31, which eclipsed the old mark of 2:20.60 established by a Sunnyside squad two years ago.

The two other pool records the Sharks set last night were established by Marisa Broersma in the girls 18&U, 50-yard breaststroke and by Ryen Bonzi in the girls 10&U, 50-yard freestyle.

Broersma's winning time of 34.78 seconds was four-tenths of a second quicker than the old record, which she, herself, set in 2011. Bonzi obliterated the old record in the 50-free, clocking a time of 30.13. The previous best at girls 10&U was 34.75 seconds, set this year by Othello's Shaya Parrish.
