Oh, Ichiro! How could you?

When I first saw the news, it was a status on Facebook that simply said, "So sad about Ichiro."

I'm generally not a sports fanatic, but I do love my hometown teams. I have followed the Mariners since I was a child, and I love the team despite their losses. I love it when they win, but I don't hate 'em when they lose.

I've been a fan of Ichiro since the day he arrived in Seattle. He was a sign of the future and an incredible player. I enjoyed seeing him in action.

But one thing baseball fans know is to always be ready for disappointment.

When I saw the Facebook status, I was afraid Ichiro had died or retired. I quickly searched for information online... only to learn the news was worse.

Ichiro had joined the Yankees.

As a devout Seattle fan, the Yankees represent everything I hate about baseball. Big money, rude fans and inflated egos. The Yankees are a team I don't follow or watch for any reason. They are dead to me.

And now Ichiro is as well.

I understand why Ichiro would go, I understand the reasoning of the Mariners. I understand all the ins and outs of it. But emotionally I will never accept it.

I take comfort in the fact that Ichiro will certainly be wearing a Mariners uniform when he inevitably enters the Baseball Hall of Fame.

But another era has ended for the M's. It's a sad day for Seattle, and for this fan.
