Mabton shooting victim recovering

MABTON - This past Tuesday detectives from the Yakima County Sheriff's Office were tasked to investigate a shooting that occurred in the 500 block of Rose Street in Mabton.

The investigation followed a pursuit of the suspect, identified by Detective Chief Stew Graham as 18-year-old Adrian Garcia of Sunnyside, and the suspect's subsequent apprehension.

Mabton Police Chief Rick Gutierrez said, "I turned the investigation over to the sheriff's office because they have more resources."

Garcia was taken into custody by Sunnyside police after Tuesday's pursuit ended on Sunnyside-Mabton Highway.

The victim, said Graham, was 19-year-old Jesus Gastelum of Mabton.

Graham said Gastelum suffered from a gunshot wound to the abdomen following a dispute over monies owed for vehicle parts.

He said the victim was transported to Sunnyside Community Hospital after the shooting and was transported to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle for further treatment.

"He's expected to live," Graham said this morning (Friday).

Charges of first degree assault against Garcia are being sought by the Yakima County Prosecutor's Office, according to Graham.

On Wednesday a Yakima County Superior Court judge ordered Garcia held on $100,000 bail. His arraignment is set for Wednesday, Aug. 8.
