Sunnyside's Promise to benefit from local karaoke competition

Having had success with a karaoke contest last month, the owners of Fuego's Lounge in Sunnyside are sponsoring another contest, providing Yakima Valley vocal artists the opportunity to sing out a tune beginning tomorrow (Thursday).

This contest is different, however.

Rosa Picazo, marketing manager for the local eatery and night spot, said there will be a cover charge of $3.

"A percentage of the cover charge will be donated to Sunnyside's Promise," she said, stating the owners of Fuego Lounge wanted the karaoke contest to be fun, but they also wanted to help a local non-profit organization.

Several other local businesses have been generous as sponsors this time around, as well.

Picazo said the local businesses see a need for entertainment opportunities, but also want to help the community's youth through programs offered by Sunnyside's Promise.

Those local businesses include Divine Styles, DJ Castro Services, Imperial Printing and Embroidery, Panda Bear Daycare, and Society Salon and Spa.

The contestants will be judged by Jesse Aguirre, Edgar Mendez and Teresa Schultz.

Each Thursday, June 7, through July 12, Yakima Valley singers will take center stage at Fuego Lounge.

Contestants can sign-up for the competition until 5 p.m. tomorrow night (Thursday) by calling Picazo at 830-9970.

The competition begins at 8 p.m. and the judges throughout the next six weeks will eliminate competitors until the night of the finale on Thursday, July 12.

The competition is open to anyone 21-years-old or older.

"We hope to have a great turnout as the community will not only support our local talent, but also give a small contribution to the children's programs offered by Sunnyside's Promise," said Picazo.
