Sunnyside swimmers glide past Grandview

Sunnyside's Erick Vergara races through the water in the boys 10&U, 40-yard butterfly. Stroke judges disqualified the youngster, however, keeping him from posting a qualifying time.

GRANDVIEW - Parker Van de Graaf and Alex Perez each swam away with six wins to spearhead the Sunnyside Sharks' dominating 566-258 victory over the Neptunes in Grandview's home pool last Thursday night.

For the visiting Sharks, it was their second Mid-Valley Swim League win in as many outings this summer. Grandview fell to 0-2 on the season, having lost earlier in the week at Selah against the defending league champion Dolphins.

In besting the Neptunes last Thursday, Sunnyside piled up wins in 53 of the events compared to the 21 victories Grandview's swimmers tallied. Those first-place points gave the Sharks an insurmountable 307 to 121 lead.

Sunnyside, thanks to its superior team depth, was just as effective in piling up runner-up finishes, each worth four team points. All told, the Sharks totaled 43 second-place finishes to the 15 Grandview claimed, giving Sunnyside a 172 to 60 boost in the team scoring.

The third-place finishes, each worth two team points, swayed slightly in Sunnyside's favor. The Sharks notched 30 third-place performances compared to the 26 bronze efforts that Grandview had. Sunnyside also enjoyed a slight advantage in picking up fourth-place finishes, each worth one team point, via a 27 to 25 edge.

Although a host of Sharks found the 40-yard Grandview pool to their liking, it was Van de Graaf and Perez who piled up the biggest numbers for Sunnyside.

A boys 12&U competitor, Van de Graaf was in on both of the relay victories in his age division, and came away with wins in all four of the 40-yard events (butterfly, breaststroke, backstroke and freestyle). In the only race he didn't win for his age bracket, the 160-yard individual medley, Van de Graaf settled for runner-up honors, finishing only behind teammate Jace Ziegler.

Perez, a boys 16&U swimmer for Sunnyside, mirrored Van de Graaf's accomplishments by winning four of the five individual races and helping out on both of the winning relay squads in his age division. The one event he didn't come out on top, the 40-yard backstroke, Perez hit the wall approximately half a second after teammate Christopher Martin, which was good for second-place honors.

Also coming through big for the Sharks was mighty mite boys 8&U swimmer Logan Rodriguez. He swept all four races his age division has to offer. And, he did it convincingly, winning by margins of 3.8, 9.7, 5.5 and 5 seconds, respectively, in the 'fly, breast, back and free.

On the girls side, the Sharks were led by the duo of Jolissa Mendoza (12&U) and Payton Sample (16&U).

Mendoza captured wins in the 40-yard 'fly, back and free races, and swam to victory in the 160-yard IM. She also swam the anchor leg of the winning girls 12&U, 160-yard freestyle relay squad. Her one blemish came in the 40-yard breaststroke, where she finished second to Grandview's Kylie Colson by 1.32 seconds.

Sample won each of the 40-yard events for girls 16&U. The one other race, the 160-yard IM, was claimed by Aaliyah Fonseca of Grandview.

Girls 8&U

Sunnyside's Elissa Hill topped the competition by picking up a pair of wins...in the 40-yard breast and back events. Teammate Daniella Duran nabbed top honors in the 40-butterfly.

Grandview's Jessamyn Hellner-Gomez kept the Sharks from making it a sweep, however, as the Neptune finished 1.09 seconds ahead of Hill in the 40-free for the victory.

Girls 10&U

An eight-girl Sunnyside contingent, with Bailey Hazzard at the helm, prevented the Neptunes from picking up any first or second-place points.

Hazzard knocked down wins in the 40-yard 'fly, breast and backstroke races, and placed second in the 160-IM.

Sunnyside teammates Kameran Rodriguez and Ryen Bonzi grabbed the two other wins, in the IM and freestyle, and Rodriguez also had a second-place finish in the breast.

Arizona Rodriguez was a two-time runner-up for Sunnyside ('fly and free), with teammate Aysiah Garza collecting a second-place finish in the backstroke.

Along with the likes of Lala Campos, Arianna Sanchez and Abigail Albrecht, Sunnyside's 10&U swimmers won both of the relay events.

Girls 12&U

Jolissa Mendoza, with her four individual event victories, provided the Sharks all the firepower they needed, yet Sunnyside still received some nifty performances from Emily Banks, who had two runner-up efforts ('fly and back) and swam on one of the two winning relay squads.

The one Shark who was on both winning relay squads was Emily Broersma.

The only Grandview swimmer who finished better than third was Colson, the winner of the 40-yard breaststroke.

Girls 14&U

The Sunnyside foursome of Katelyn Banks, Aydan Harrington, Kalie Bestebreur and Lindsay Schilperoort kept Grandview's swimmers from earning any first or second-place points.

The same foursome teamed to win both relay races (160-yard medley and 160-yard freestyle).

In the individual events Banks was first in the 'fly and free and placed second in the breast; Harrington won the IM and claimed runner-up honors in the 'fly and back; Bestebreur bested the field in the breaststroke and was second in the freestyle; and Schilperoort won the back and walked off with the second best performance in the IM.

Girls 16&U

Payton Sample, the four-time winner for Sunnyside, and teammate Madi Marquez, four times a runner-up, piled up the bulk of the points.

Girls 18&U

The Grandview duo of Samanta Castaneda and Jessica Morales accumulated five victories and four second-place finishes between them. Castaneda came away with wins in the 40-yard back and free, as well as in the 160-yard individual medley. Morales was the winner in the 40-butterfly and breaststroke events, and claimed second-place honors in the back, free and IM.

Sunnyside would have been relegated to just third and fourth-place team points had it not been for Charley Beth Rollinger's one runner-up placing, that coming in the 40-yard 'fly.

Boys 8&U

With Logan Rodriguez of Sunnyside winning all four events, teammates Myles Newhouse and Cesar Vargas backed him up by combining for three runner-up performances.

The one other second-place finisher proved to be Grandview's Damian Smasne, that performance coming in the 40-yard breast.

Boys 10&U

Sunnyside's Clay Schilperoort earned bragging rights by winning three of the five events...the 40-yard 'fly and back, as well as the 160-yard IM. Schilperoort also returned home with a pair of second-place finishes in the 40-breast and free races.

The Grandview tandem of Nicolas Cortez (breast) and Angel Morales (free) picked up the two other victories.

Boys 12&U

The only 'Top 2' placing the Neptunes could muster was Westly Lakins' runner-up finish in the 40-yard breaststroke.

The remainder of the first and second-place team points was earned by Sunnyside, most notably Parker Van de Graaf, who was in on six victories. The Sharks also got three runner-up performances from Carlo Rodriguez, and the IM win by Jace Ziegler.

Boys 14&U

In probably the most competitive age division of the night, Fox Rodriguez and Adrian Heffron combined to earn the Sharks three wins. Rodriguez's victories came in the 40-yard 'fly and back, with Heffron earning his win in the 40-free. The duo also combined for three runner-up placings.

Grandview's standouts included Micah Binfet, the 40-breast winner; and Maurice Prieto, the victor in the 160-yard IM and runner-up in the 40-'fly and free.

Binfet and Prieto also teamed with Tavian Valenzuela and David Wacenske for a pair of relay victories.

Boys 16&U

Sunnyside's Alex Perez, winner of four individual events and a member of both winning relay squads, paced the Sharks to nearly shutting Grandview out of claiming any first or second-place team points. His back-up, via runner-up finishes, was Nate Scheenstra, who had three of them. Sunnyside also got the 40-back victory from Christopher Martin.

The lone 'Top 2' performance claimed by the Neptunes came from Brendon Lynch-McGhan, second in the 40-yard breaststroke.

Boys 18&U

Fabian Ruiz of Grandview proved to be the class of the field, winner of four of the five individual events. The only race he didn't prevail in, the 40-yard breast, was claimed by Sunnyside's Giovanni Rodriguez, who clipped Ruiz by approximately one second. Rodriguez was second to Ruiz in the 'fly, free and IM.
