Grandview Fourth of July celebration afoot

GRANDVIEW - The 35th annual flag raising ceremony in Grandview, commemorating the Fourth of July, will be staged at Stokely Square on Wednesday, July 4.

The 9 a.m. event will feature members of the Lower Valley Honor Guard and a special tribute to Leslie Amundson. The U.S. Air Force World War II veteran, a Sunnyside native, was a prisoner of war at Stalag Luft 1 located at Barth, Germany.

A 21-gun salute at the flag raising ceremony, followed by the playing of Taps, is planned to honor all veterans who have made the ultimate sacrifice for the freedoms experienced by American citizens.

Jabrelli Moralez will sing the Star Spangled Banner and Jay James will provide the invocation.

Young men who have achieved the rank of Eagle Scout as members of local Boy Scout troops will be recognized at the Fourth of July ceremony. They include Kaleb Merrick, Sterling Clark, Bradley Buttars, McKay Ashton, Ira Stoddard and Lance James.

The women's chorus of the Church of Latter Day Saints Rattlesnake Mountain Ward will perform, as will the young children's chorus.

The guest speaker at the Fourth of July ceremonies will be Charles Dawsey and attendees of the event will also enjoy an additional musical performance by the Columbia Patriot Wind Ensemble of Richland.

Following the ceremony will be a free continental breakfast. The community event is sponsored by the Rattlesnake Mountain Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
