Senior games set to start soon

The registration deadline is fast approaching for the Washington Senior Games, an Olympic-style multi-sport event that will be held in the South Puget Sound area from Saturday, July 7, to Sunday, Aug. 5, with most of the events happening Thursday, July 26, to Sunday, July 29.

To participate, athletes must be 50 years of age or older and submit registration and payment by Monday, July 16. The registration fee is $33 with an additional sport event fee of $9 (except for golf, which is $50). Registration forms and a full schedule of events can be found at

The Washington Senior Games, now in its 16th year of running the largest Olympic-style multi-sport event in Washington, will be hosted by the Puget Sound Senior Games this year.

Almost 2,000 participants will take part in the Senior Games this July and August, and medalists will qualify for the 2013 National Senior Games in Cleveland, Ohio.

Events include basketball, bowling, cowboy action shooting, pickleball, pool/8-ball, race walking, racquetball, 5 & 10K runs, shuffleboard, swimming, table tennis, tennis, track and field and volleyball.

Some events will be held outside the event weekend. Cycling and dance will be held Saturday, July 7. Softball will be held July 14, 15, 21 and 22. Golf will be held Thursday, July 19. Archery will be held Saturday, July 21. Badminton will be held Sunday, Aug. 5, and soccer will be held Aug. 4 and 5.
