Weather spotter training March 27

YAKIMA - Even though the Doppler weather radar is scanning the skies and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Weather Radio is broadcasting forecasts, watches and warnings, forecasters depend upon getting good ground-truth information from trained Skywarn weather spotters.

Volunteers are being sought to participate in the latest weather spotter training on Tuesday, March 27, in Yakima. The pre-registration deadline is Monday, March 19.

Weather spotters trained by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's National Weather Service are key volunteers who assist the meteorologists by providing up-to-date information about storm activity.

The Skywarn Weather Spotter training is free and will be held at Yakima Fire Station 95, located at 807 E. Nob Hill Blvd., beginning at 2 p.m.

The training is co-sponsored by the Yakima County Emergency Management. A total of 10 people must pre-register for the training by March 19th. Otherwise, the class will be cancelled.

Interested volunteers can pre-register at and follow the Skywarn link at the top of the page or by calling Dennis Hull at (541) 969-7136.
