YAKIMA - The Sunnyside Lady Grizzly track team opened its 2012 season this past Saturday at the Eisenhower High School jamboree.
The Sunnyside girls were paced by Marisa Broersma, who claimed first place honors in the 300 meters with a time of 44.28.
"Broersma has been solid for four years..she should have a good year this year," said Sunnyside track Coach Darren Mezger.
Broersma and teammate Vanessa Alvarez finished second and third, respectively, in the 100 with clocking of 13.68 and 14.03. The event was won by Toppenish's Angie Zuniga in a time of 12.97.
Brittney Broersma was fourth in the 300 in 47.34, and sixth in the 55-meter hurdles in 10.6.
Alvarez also placed well for Sunnyside in the long jump with a fifth-place leap of 12.10.75.
The Lady Grizzlies also received a top-10 performance from Rosario Rodriguez, who tied with Toppenish's Maria Rueda for 10th place with a throw of 25 feet in the shot put.
In the 1,000 meters, Betsy Reynoso finished in ninth place for Sunnyside with a time of 4:05.93.
The Sunnyside boys and girls varsity track team travel to the Papa Wells Invite this coming Saturday at East Valley High School.
