Grizzlies earn tie in season opene

The Sunnyside Grizzly soccer team earned a 1-1 tie with visiting Davis during action this past Saturday.

Sunnyside scored in the 15th minute on a penalty kick drilled into the back of the net by Ricardo Leal.

The Grizzlies clung to a 1-0 lead until the Pirates found an answer with seven minutes to play in the contest. Davis scored the equalizer in the 73rd minute and the game ended in a tie because non-league contests do not extend into overtime, noted SHS Athletic Director Bill Daley.

Though even on the scoreboard, the Pirates outshot Sunnyside, with 16 shot attempts on goal compared to eight for the Grizzlies.

First-year SHS keeper Cristian Vargas helped keep Davis at bay with 15 saves.

Due to construction at the high school, the Grizzlies will host Wapato this coming Thursday at 4 p.m. at the Chief Kamiakin Elementary School field. The varsity and JV soccer squads will be in action at the same time on the elementary school's fields.
