New detective position on hold

The Sunnyside City Council on Monday decided to postpone a decision to promote Sunnyside Police Officer Jaime Prieto to detective.

The postponement was made because the council members did not recall approving an additional detective when it approved the police department's gang elimination strategy.

If the promotion is approved a stipend of $2,700 would accompany the detective position, approximately $750 of that funding would be for clothing expenses as agreed upon in the last collective bargaining agreement.

Deputy Police Chief Phil Schenck said the addition of a detective to the police ranks would help keep overtime costs down and would relieve patrol officers of some cases.

"Patrol would remain fully staffed," said Schenck.

Councilmen Jim Restucci and Don Vlieger said they didn't remember approving the position during discussions regarding the gang elimination strategy, although Schenck said the position was included in discussions that took place in May 2010.

The council members unanimously agreed to review minutes of the meetings from that month before moving forward.
