SHS Grizzly Dance Team earns State berth

PASCO - This past weekend the Sunnyside Grizzly Dance Team qualified for the 3A State Dance competition after earning top honors in the hip-hop category at a District competition in Pasco. The defending State champions will vie for the 2011-12 title Saturday, March 24.

The team also qualified for the State competition in the pom category, although Moses Lake earned the top honors in the District pom competition.

Because Sunnyside earned the high score with its hip-hop routine, a Harry Potter themed number, the Grizzly Dance Team won the overall District title.

Nine dancers will also have the opportunity to compete in the State individual drill down competition. They include Jasmine Paxton, Roger Lozano, Kayla Amaro, Stefani Anciso, Amanda Cervantes, Jessica Paxton, Josh Magana, Lauren Meeker and Tara Van Corbach.

Coach Melodie Griffin is proud of how well her team performed this past weekend and throughout the season.

"They're very hard working, and they're a very young team...we are looking forward to defending our title at State," she said.

The team remains undefeated for the 2011-12 season.

The State competition will take place at the Yakima Valley SunDome on Saturday, March 24.
