MABTON - Last night's home soccer match for the Mabton Vikings was one of celebration as the team outperformed Granger 5-1.
Viking Coach Junior Garcia said he was pleased with how hard his team played yesterday.
"We've been working against the wind the past two matches," he said.
Granger, said Garcia, showed a lot of improvement over last year.
He said Mabton had to work hard to get past the Spartan defense, but managed 15 shots on goal.
The first successful goal was made on a corner kick. Gil Macedo gained possession, worked the ball through the defense and lobbed it to teammate Lorenzo Sanchez in the first 10 minutes of the match. Sanchez spotted an opening and booted the ball past the crossbars.
The next two goals were made by Mabton's Edgar Diaz. Those goals were made on breakaways.
Macedo scored the final goal of the opening half, giving Mabton a 4-0 edge at intermission.
"Granger began attacking us more in the second half and scored on our new keeper, Juan Macedo.
Granger, however, wasn't able to make good on three other attempts against the younger Macedo.
Mabton starting keeper Gerardo Barajas had in the opening half been successful at keeping the ball from getting between the crossbars four times.
"My team (the Vikes) are doing pretty good...we still have quite a bit of improvement if we are to be successful throughout the rest of the season," said Garcia.
He, however, is pleased that the early season league win was able to provide him a read on his players.
Mabton (1-1) will next Tuesday, March 20, host Ki-Be in another league match-up.
