Mabton Vikes eke out 2-1 win against Ki-Be

MABTON - The Mabton Viking soccer team last night dominated the field against Kiona-Benton and earned the 2-1 SCAC league victory.

Viking Coach Junior Garcia said the match wasn't nearly as close as the score reflects.

Mabton had a total of 16 opportunities to get the ball past the crossbars, while the Bears had just five shots on goal.

The Vikings earned the first goal in the 11th minute.

"Josh Carrasco scored after dribbling the ball from about the halfway mark," said Garcia.

He said Carrasco kicked the ball toward the goal, it deflected off the head of one of his teammates and soared past the Ki-Be keeper.

The Bears battled back across the field and at the 25-minute mark were successful at scoring a goal of their own. Pablo Ayala of Ki-Be got past the Viking defense and after a one-on-one with Mabton keeper Juan Macedo was able to boot the ball past the crossbars.

Mabton, seven minutes later, was able to get the last goal of the match. Damien Diaz shot the ball toward the net from approximately 18 yards out. The ball deflected off Ki-Be keeper Pablo Chavez. Mauricio Palomino of the Vikes gained possession of the ball, kicked it and scored.

The Vikings took a 2-1 lead and maintained that advantage through the remainder of the match.

"That's how we saved the game," said Garcia, stating his team was shut down in the second half of the match.

"They (the Bears) marked us the entire second half," said Garcia, stating he was disappointed the Vikings couldn't capitalize on any other scoring opportunities.

He said the closing half of the match "...was intense.

"We won, but we could have done better scoring when we had the chance...it wasn't Mabton's best game."

The Vikings (2-1) will tomorrow host Toppenish's JV team for Mabton's first non-league match-up of the 2012 season.
