Volunteers sought to do 'chores' for local seniors

Sunnyside resident Libby Werkhoven says volunteering with the area's elderly doing chores around their homes is a rewarding feeling.

Werkhoven invited Volunteer Chore Services Program Coordinator Natalie Curfman to this past Wednesday morning's Daybreak Rotary meeting to speak about the program.

The Volunteer Chore Services program coordinates volunteers with the area's low-income elderly and disabled adults who need assistance around their homes. The volunteer work consists of daily household chores like mowing the lawn, weeding a garden or cleaning a home. Some clients also need drivers to help with daily duties like grocery shopping and trips to the pharmacy.

Curfman says her particular office in Sunnyside serves elderly folks from Prosser to Granger.

"We're always looking for more hands, we need drivers" she added.

Currently the clients served in the area are an average age of 72 with 81 percent of them being female. In addition, 61 percent of the clients live alone and their average monthly income totals nearly $773.

Curfman says volunteers also do some carpentry work, like building wheelchair ramps for the clients.

The commitment of the program is to keep elders and adults with disabilities living independently in their own homes through a network of caring community-minded volunteers of all ages.

Werkhoven says through volunteering she's also made friends. "They just love to visit, whether you have an hour or an entire afternoon."

The program is funded through state dollars along with contributions from the Catholic Family and Child Service Diocese of Yakima and United Way. But Curfman says monetary donations from individuals are always welcome as well.
