OTHELLO - The Grandview Lady Greyhound softball team punched its ticket to the CWAC District tourney with a 7-3 victory last Saturday over Ephrata in a District play-in contest.
Grandview cracked the scoreboard early in the loser-out contest played at Othello. The Lady Greyhounds manufactured three runs in the first inning by sandwiching four hits around a walk and a stolen base.
Grandview extended its lead to 7-0 by tacking on two runs each in the third and fifth innings. What proved to be the winning run scored in the third frame when Brittney Saldana smacked a single to drive in Marissa Caballero.
As with Grandview's first-inning rally, the Lady Greyhounds again played some small ball in scoring a pair of runs off of two walks, Saldana's single and a double by Samanta Castaneda.
Grandview closed out its scoring in the fifth inning, on an RBI hit by Castaneda and a sacrifice by Gabriela Arreola.
Ephrata tried to mount a late comeback, tallying twice in the bottom of the fifth and a solo run in the seventh inning, but it was too little, too late.
Castaneda sparked Grandview with a 4-for-5 day at the plate for three RBI. Verduzco was 3-for-4 at the plate and scored two runs.
Ashley Van Tress turned in a solid performance on the mound for the Lady Greyhounds, scattering eight hits and giving up just two earned runs while striking out five Tiger batters.
"I am extremely proud of the girls. It was a real team effort, as everyone contributed," said Coach Ramiro Gonzalez. "When the girls are playing like this, it is fun to watch! We were clicking on all cylinders."
Grandview, 10-11, will open the District tourney this Saturday in Selah at 11 a.m. against Lower Valley rival Prosser in a loser-out contest.
"Hopefully we can take this momentum into next weekend," Gonzalez said.
