ROYAL CITY - In the final road games of the regular season, the Mabton softball squad hoped yesterday's match-ups against Royal City would have resulted in victories.
Despite their efforts, Mabton succumbed to Royal in the doubleheader, 6-1 in the first game, and 8-2 in the second.
In the first game, Royal jumped out to a 3-0 first inning lead. Mabton attempted to recover, scoring a run in the second. Mabton had a total of one run on six hits and three walks. The first game ended with a Royal victory, 6-1, thanks in part to five Mabton errors.
Mabton Coach Jesus Sustaita says the Royal girls capitalized on Mabton's errors.
Despite the lack of runs by her club, Mabton pitcher Jazzee Sustaita struck out six Royal players in yesterday's opener and went 1-for-4 at the plate. Teammates Isabella Ahumada (2-for-3), Adi Barajas (2-for-2 with one walk), Tere Aceves (1-for-2 with one walk) and Evelina Mendoza (1-for-1) also had strong showings at bat.
In the second game of the doubleheader, the Mabton girls started out strong, tallying two runs in the first stanza. In the second inning, Royal tied the score with two runs. It wasn't until the fifth inning that another player from either team was able to score.
The Royal players were able to secure five additional runs in the fifth and one run in the sixth, leaving the score 8-2.
Mabton (5-12) is scheduled to host Columbia-Burbank in its final doubleheader of the regular season this Thursday, May 10.
