COWICHE - The Mabton Viking soccer team was unable to score a goal against the undefeated Highland Scotties yesterday in the second round of the District playoffs. Mabton was eliminated from further postseason action as a result of the loss.
The Scotties scored the first of their three goals in the 8th minute of yesterday's match. Luis Nogales teamed up with Jesus Gutierrez to get past the Viking defense. It was Gutierrez who capitalized on an open opportunity.
The pair teamed up again with five minutes left in the opening half and Nogales was able to get the ball back to Gutierrez for the second goal of the match.
Highland had a 2-0 lead going into halftime, and kept its momentum in the closing half.
The final goal was scored off an assist by David Paniagua to secure the shutout in the final minute of the match.
According to Mabton Assistant Coach Mike Davis the Vikings had placed all but its two defenders "up front" and were caught off guard when the final goal was made.
The Scotties throughout the match kept Mabton on the defensive end of the field, but the Vikings wanted a goal. The coaches made a decision to place most of the players on the offensive end, hoping for a scoring opportunity before the clock ran out, according to Davis.
He said it was unfortunate Mabton didn't have that opportunity.
"Mabton played really hard...it's just that Highland has a really good team," Davis said.
Mabton finished the season with a winning record of 12-6, but that wasn't enough to push the Vikings into a Regional playoff.
