EAST WENATCHEE - Sunnyside's lone winner from last Friday's Columbia Basin Big Nine District boys track and field meet, junior Eduardo Salmeron, will lead a six-Grizzly contingent to the 3A Regional meet in Richland this coming Friday and Saturday.
To qualify for the Regional meet, which will intertwine athletes from both the Columbia Basin Big Nine and Greater Spokane League, a Top-8 finish was required in the individual events at District.
Salmeron qualified for Regionals in two events, but it was in the triple jump where he really stood out. Although he didn't set a season best, the SHS junior recorded a leap of 42-1.5, three inches better than the runner-up, Hanford senior Bernard Deatherage.
SHS Coach Darren Mezger said his star athlete has been fighting a sore ankle, so the goal at District was to just get Salmeron qualified for Regionals. As it turned out, Salmeron's performance in the triple jump was by far and away the best on the day.
Salmeron also will be moving on to Regionals in the long jump. He placed fourth at District, hosted by Eastmont High School, with an effort of 20-7.5. The winning long jump mark of 22-3.5 was set by Eastmont's Trenton Osborn.
Another two-event qualifier for Regionals was Sunnyside sophomore Elijah Pena. In the 110-meter hurdles Pena placed second in a time of 16.23 seconds. The winner, Hanford senior Joseph Collett, clocked a time of 14.80.
Pena, too, earned a Regional berth in the 300m hurdles. He placed fourth at District with a clocking of 42.80 seconds. Hanford's Collett again was the winner (40.61).
The one other Sunnyside athlete to earn two Top-8 finishes at District was junior Eric Amaro. He was fifth in the javelin (163-2), bested by teammate Miguel Guzman, third with a throw of 168-5. The winning javelin throw was 170-5, set by Jeremiah Sprague of Kennewick. Amaro also qualified for Regionals in the 110m hurdles, placing seventh in 16.74 seconds.
The two other SHS athletes who set Regional-qualifying marks at last Friday's District boys meet were senior Reyes Cuevas, fourth in the 400m race (51.22); and junior Sergio Lugo, seventh in the triple jump (40-2).
Kamiakin's boys won the team title at District with 158 points, 16 more than the runner-up Hanford Falcons. Sunnyside placed sixth with 53 points from the eight-school field.
