EPHRATA - Grandview is sending their top doubles team to the Regional tournament in Yakima, as Stevan Ramirez and Abel Pasillas fought their way up in the second-chance bracket to earn the District's fifth spot.
The pair faced two must-win matches on Monday and showed their mettle by fighting for two wins.
"Stevan and Abel played their hearts out on a very hot day in Ephrata," said Coach Ronda Penwell. "After a tough loss in Ephrata on Saturday, the boys battled back to win both their matches in three sets against two quality teams."
In the first match, the Greyhounds faced Ellensburg's No. 3 team of Clark and Hurson. After winning the first set 7-5, the pair dropped the equally hard fought second set 5-7. In the final set Ramirez and Pasillas subdued their opponents 6-4 to earn another shot at Regionals.
In the second match the Grandview pair battled Othello's No. 1 team of Montemayor and Taff. The Greyhounds lost the first set by a decisive 6-2, but refused to give into the heat and came back to take the last two matches 6-1, 6-2.
"When it came to their final match they had to dig deep to battle past the heat and their fatigue," said Coach Penwell. "They were determined to win and they did just that in an exciting and intense match."
Ramirez and Pasillas will be up against Toppenish in round one of the Regional tourney on Saturday, May 19, in Yakima.
