YAKIMA - Grandview Greyhounds Abel Pasillas and Stevan Ramirez won two of their three matches at the Regional tourney in Yakima this past Saturday, and will now be headed to State as the number three seed from the region.
The pair's first match was against the undefeated number one CWAC team from Toppenish of Gavin Reynolds and CJ Stauffer.
"Toppenish had not lost a single set throughout the entire season, so we knew it would be a tough match. The boys did a great job going out strong from the beginning, something we have been working on improving," said Grandview Coach Ronda Penwell.
"They played really smart and with the desire to win. In a heated and intense battle, Abel and Stevan beat Toppenish in two tie-breaker sets." The final scores for the match were 7-5, 7-6 (9-7).
The win guaranteed Pasillas and Ramirez at least fourth place in the Regional tournament.
"There was much celebration at the end of match," said Coach Penwell. "In celebration of beating a rival and getting into State."
The Greyhounds next faced off against Connor Haidle and Chris Myers of West Valley, and didn't fare as well, losing the match in two sets, 6-1, 6-0. But the team didn't give up and settle for fourth place.
"Stevan and Abel also showed a lot of determination in spirit in their third match of the day against a quality Pullman team," said Coach Penwell. "They were able to win in three sets, earning third place in our region heading to State."
The pair defeated Joseph Chung and Jamie Simanson of Pullman in three sets, 4-6, 7-6(12-10), 6-1 in their final match.
The State tourney will be held Friday, May 25, and Saturday, May 26, at the University of Washington.
