Full slate of activities for Mabton's annual festival

MABTON - A dancing horse contest will be one of the highlights at Mabton Community Day & Health Fair on Saturday, June 2.

Horses will dance to live music from a band in Mabton's first competitive horse dancing event, part of the 2012 Mabton Community Day and Health Fair.

"We are delighted to be able to bring this exciting and beautiful event to the community," said Gaye Vandermyn, president of the Greater Mabton Association, organizers of the community day.

"With the great interest we've encountered, it promises to be an outstanding show for talented riders and their horses."

Riders and owners can register their horses for the competition by calling Gabriel Mireles at 509-831-8502. Entry fee is $10. All riders also are welcome to join the Mabton Community Day Parade, free of charge. Line-up for the parade begins at 7:30 a.m. at Artz-Fox Elementary School. Judging for the parade ends at 9:30 a.m. and the parade begins at 10:30 a.m., winding through Mabton on Main and B streets, ending at Mabton High School.

The horse dancing competition will begin at 11:30 a.m. in the vacant lot at B and Washington Street, located across the street from Mabton's Feezell Park. The vacant lot will be transformed into a fenced dancing horse arena for the event.

Mabton Community Day and Health Fair is jointly organized by the Center for Community Health Promotion and the Greater Mabton Association. The event opens at 9 a.m. and will feature food and craft booths as well as booths providing free health information, free ice cream, bottled water and a jump castle, as well as children's game-booths. Competitive children's games such as sack races and bubble-gum blowing contests begin at 12:30 p.m.

Registration for a bike show in the park begins at 11 a.m. with judging for prizes at 2 p.m.

A youth pool tournament, sponsored by the Silver Dollar Inn, opens at 5 p.m. for all youth, 10 to 15 years of age. Registration is free at the Silver Dollar Inn, site of the competition and all participants will receive a free hot dog, soft drink and chips.

A family BINGO game begins at 2:30 p.m., a silent auction opens at noon in the park and closes at 5 p.m. A Posole cooking contest begins at 3 p.m. and a raffle drawing for a 32-inch flat screen TV, a BBQ grill, an X-Box 360 and a bicycle will take place at 5 p.m.

The Day will conclude with the crowning of a Little Miss Mabton at a "Diamonds and Dolls" Pageant at Artz-Fox Elementary School. The pageant, featuring singing and dancing, will begin at 7 p.m. Advance tickets are $5 with $7 tickets at the door the evening of the event.
