Interim city manager fitting in nicely in Sunnyside

Interim city manager Frank Sweet has been making some changes.

Sweet added two agenda items to the City Council meeting last night that were meant to keep the council up-to-date on budgeted items and agreements the city makes with other organizations.

The first item was renewal of the liability insurance the city must have for the airport. Sweet presented the policy and noted that the cost was under the budgeted amount.

"I just wanted you to be aware that it was in place and under budget," said Sweet.

The second item was the city's agreement with the Sunnyside swim team for its use of the swimming pool facility at Central Park.

"It's my belief that when we enter into agreements that council should be aware," said Sweet.

Sweet also asked to add a new item to future agendas that would allow city department heads to report to the council after the city manager gives his update.

The council agreed to the addition and the fire chief, public works superintendent and police chief each gave brief reports on the status of their departments.

Sweet has also made changes at city hall that have impressed at least one person who works with the city.

In the public comments portion of Tuesday evening's meeting, Kari Zapata, chair of the board of parks & recreation, stood up to compliment Sweet and Public Works Superintendent Shane Fisher for their work with the board.

She said she appreciates the open-door policy of Sweet and said he takes every concern she expresses into consideration.
