Plea nets local man nearly 20 years of jail time

YAKIMA - Manuel Angel Torres of Sunnyside will serve nearly two decades behind bars after pleading guilty earlier this week to first degree attempted murder.

That's according to the Yakima County clerk's office, which noted Torres, 30, was scheduled to go to trial next week on charges he repeatedly stabbed the mother of his two-year-old child on Jan. 8, 2012.

According to police reports at the time, the stabbing took place near the corner of South 16th Street and East Lincoln Avenue in Sunnyside.

The victim then drove herself to Sunnyside Community Hospital, where she was treated and reported the incident.

Following his guilty plea on Monday, Oct. 29, Torres was sentenced in Yakima County Superior Court to 220 months in prison, or 18 years and four months.
