BHS senior caps offcross-country career27th at 1B/2B State meet

PASCO – Bickleton High senior Peter Clinton capped off a pretty solid prep cross-country career with a 27th place finish at the 1B/2B State meet in Pasco this past Saturday. He notched a 39th place finish at State as a junior.

With Clinton leaving the prep ranks, chances are the Pirates will be turning to Troy Roberts next season to lead Bickleton’s charge on the grassy three-mile and 5,000-meter courses. Although only a freshman, Roberts proved he has the mettle to serve as the team leader next fall, as he ran to a 58th place finish at State this past Saturday.

He and Clinton were the only two Pirates who qualified to compete at State this season. Bickleton, however, came within a single team point at the District meet a week ago from advancing the entire squad to State.

This past Saturday on Pasco’s Sun Willows Golf Course, a 5,000-meter layout that features long, sloping stretches with several uphill climbs interspersed, Clinton sped to a clocking of 17:57.3. That was fast enough to put him in the top 20 percent of the field from a race that featured 129 runners.

The winning time, 15:48.3, was posted by Onalaska’s Stephen Bottoms, a senior.

Onalaska also got 14th and 15th place performances from Riley Girt and Josh Hunt, which helped the team notch third-place honors in the team scoring.

Tri-Cities Prep, behind senior Skyler Larson’s third-place finish with a clocking of 16:25.5, won the team title of the 1B/2B State meet. Tri-Cities Prep also received a fifth-place performance from Kelly Smith, a 12th place effort from Sam Leon and a 16th place finish from John Hylden.

Northwest Christian-Colbert, behind Alex Wallat’s sixth-place finish, claimed runner-up honors in the boys team scoring.

In placing 58th from the 129-harrier field, the freshman Roberts sped across the finish line for Bickleton in a time of 18:39.0.

Bottoms, in winning the 1B/2B WIAA boys State meet race, did so in convincing fashion. He finished 34 and a half seconds ahead of the runner-up, Asotin sophomore Chandler Teigen.
