Unbeaten Lady Knights earn State berth

ROCHESTER – The Lady Knights rolled over the competition at the Regional tournament this past Saturday, winning both matches in three sets, to become the top seeded team headed to State from District 5.

In the first match against Taholah, Sunnyside Christian dominated with scores of 25-11, 25-12, 25-13. The loser-out match guaranteed Sunnyside Christian a spot in the State tourney.

The second match was for seeding, and the Lady Knights once again faced their league competitors, Klickitat. Sunnyside Christian again controlled the match, winning all three sets 25-10, 25-18, 25-14. Klickitat will also be going to State.

“We played a very good tournament,” said Lady Knights Coach Stephanie Dalrymple. “We stayed together as a team. Our defensive really stepped it up during our game against Klickitat.”

Lady Knight Stormee Van Belle was a powerhouse for Sunnyside Christian at Regionals, pounding the ball for 19 kills in the two matches. She also kept the ball in play with nine perfect passes and nine digs.

Brittany Broersma spiked the ball 13 times for kills, with eight perfect passes and 10 digs in the tournament for Sunnyside Christian.

Lady Knight Alexandra Newhouse put in a 33-for-34 performance serving, with 12 perfect passes. She also dug up the ball 16 times to keep play alive.

Danika DeGroot had seven perfect passes, 25 assists and 14 digs at Regionals for Sunnyside Christian, and also managed a 24-for-25 performance from the service line.

Both Annie Brouwer and Kate Newhouse were 22-for-23 in serving for the Lady Knights. Brouwer contributed 19 perfect passes, dug up the ball 14 times and slammed the ball over the net for seven kills. Newhouse notched 10 kills, helped out her teammates with 11 perfect passes and kept the ball alive with 26 digs in the tournament.

“Going into the tournament we wanted to win so we could go to State and have a good seeding,” said Dalrymple. “The girls really stepped it up to reach these goals.”

The Lady Knights finished 10-0 in league play and are 19-0 heading into the 1B State tourney. Sunnyside Christian will be up against Shoreline Christian in the first round of State at 11:30 a.m., Friday, Nov. 9, at the SunDome in Yakima.
